Episode 8: New Beginings

Bitter Honey is a Ghanaian-based series, centered around the Quartey family. Kojo Quartey; a taxi driver, his wife Aba; who runs a bank’s canteen, and their three children; Kuku, Abena and Maama live through a series of fortunate and unfortunate events. The Bitter Honey series tells the story of different bittersweet experiences that build their characters and teach them life lessons. Enjoy.

Aunty Aba turned out to be very good at managing a canteen. The bank hired her as an intermediary between its employees and the catering service that runs the bank’s kitchen.

In the first two months on the job, the employees of the catering service were a bit hostile to Aunty Aba’s management.

Aunty Aba found it challenging to be on the good side of both the bank’s workers as well as the catering service’s workers. But being a down to earth and affable woman, the challenge didn’t hold much sway on her.

Things were looking brighter for Aunty Aba. She was a sweetheart to everyone who was a regular at the canteen and those who were infrequent had heard about the waves of pleasure she was causing in the bank.

Four months had passed, and she was in a very happy place both at her job and at home. She had signed onto the company’s accommodation scheme. Now, they lived in one of the company’s apartments.

To her, they had a second chance and she was going to take this opportunity to do right by her family.

Kuuku on the other hand, was not having it as easy as Aunty Aba. Inasmuch as he was a smart young man, it had been very difficult to go through training and evaluation for the job.

He has had to balance the pressure of a high standard at work, and the pressure of high expectations at home. Pressure from all sides made him give off a hundred percent effort at work.

But no matter how much work he put in, he seemed to come out a little short. But he was still optimistic.

Aunty Aba was very pleased with the life she had now. Her children no longer had to sell on the streets. They stayed at home and read textbooks and storybooks. She was even saving up for them to go back to school at the beginning of the next academic year.

She was happy, but couldn’t shake the fear of something bad happening soon. In her line of life experiences, no good thing lasts forever. She was preparing herself for bad things to happen, but enjoying the moments of peace and stability as they lasted.
